BIM Modelling
Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been on the horizon for many years. It allows a 3D project model to serve as the principal means for communication between project activities and collaboration between project teams to simulate and visualise designs to optimise desired outcomes.
The model can be shared between the design team (architects, surveyors, civil and structural engineers) and can then be handed to the main contractor and subcontractors, and finally to the owner/operator. Each team adds discipline-specific data to the project model.
“The future of the construction industry is digital, and BIM is the future of design and long term facility management; it is government led and driven by technology and clear processes; and it is implementing change across all industries. As hardware, software and cloud applications herald greater capability to handle increasing amounts of raw data and information, use of BIM will become even more pronounced than it is in current projects” – extract by NBS, 08 December 2015
For the right projects, the team will gain value through the increased level of planning by reducing the unknowns in the implementation process, thereby reducing the overall risk to all parties and the project. Among others, a Project BIM helps communicate strategic goals, define roles and responsibilities, align and integrate workflow, outline additional resources needed, ensure obligations are fulfilled, and provide a milestone driven approach. It outlines the vision with implementation details for the team to follow throughout the project life cycle.
On a global scale, the United States, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and France require the use of BIM for government building procurement. In the Asia-Pacific region, China, South Korea, and Singapore have taken steps to achieve BIM implementation through a planned approach.
B.Ramgoolam & Associates Inc. was recently commissioned on a major residential development in Johannesburg, where a BIM Model will be developed for effective project delivery.
By using such technologies, B.Ramgoolam & Associates Inc. is able to enhance its value proposition whilst remaining globally competitive.
